Milkshake Toppings and Extras: What Actually Improves the Glass
By Panjtan Juice ยท Published 25 October 2026
Every milkshake arrives with a quiet question: should anything go on top? A drizzle, a sprinkle, a scoop, a biscuit โ the extras menu can feel like a second order in itself. Some extras genuinely improve a shake. Others fight it, bury it, or turn a balanced glass into a dessert that nobody can finish. This guide sorts the extras worth asking for from the ones worth skipping, flavour by flavour, the way we judge them at the counter.
First, Understand the Base
A good milkshake is already complete: fruit or flavour, milk, ice and the right sweetness, blended thick enough to hold a straw upright. Anything added should do one of three jobs โ add a flavour that is missing, add a texture the shake lacks, or make the glass more enjoyable to finish. An extra that does none of these is decoration, and decoration melts. Before adding anything, taste the shake as it comes.
Ice Cream on Top: The Classic Extra
The single most reliable extra is a scoop of ice cream, and it works because it changes the shake gradually rather than all at once. As it melts, it thickens and enriches the drink from the top down, so the last third of the glass tastes better than the first. It suits fruit shakes best โ a strawberry milkshake (Rs 300) with a scoop, or a mango milkshake (Rs 300) made as a with-ice-cream variant (Rs 350), gains a creaminess that plain milk cannot give.
The warning: ice cream on a shake that is already very sweet โ chocolate, Oreo, majon โ can tip it into heaviness. For those, a smaller scoop, or none at all, keeps the glass drinkable. Rich shakes need restraint; light shakes can carry the extra.
Nuts, Dates and Crunch
Crunch is the texture milkshakes lack, and it is why nuts and dates work so well as extras. Crushed almonds suit a badam milkshake (Rs 300) by doubling down on its own flavour, while dates folded into a banana khajur shake (Rs 280) deepen its natural sweetness without any added sugar. The khorma badami (Rs 350) already builds this idea into the glass โ dates and almonds blended together โ which is why it needs no extra at all.
Crunch has one enemy: time. A topping sprinkled on top and left for twenty minutes goes soft and sinks. If you are taking a shake away, ask for crunchy extras separately or mixed in, so they survive the journey. At the counter, eaten at once, they are at their best.
Sauces, Drizzles and Biscuits
Chocolate drizzle suits a chocolate milkshake (Rs 300) the way salt suits soup โ it sharpens what is already there rather than adding something new. Fruit sauces suit vanilla: a vanilla milkshake (Rs 300) is a blank page, and a spoon of fruit flavour turns it into a different drink entirely. Biscuit crumbs, led by the Oreo milkshake (Rs 350), are a different idea again: they are not a topping but the flavour itself, blended through the glass so every sip carries the crunch.
The trap with sauces is quantity. A thin drizzle paints the glass and perfumes the first sips; a flood of sauce pools at the bottom and makes the last sips sickly. Ask for a light hand, especially with chocolate and caramel, and remember that you can always ask for more โ you cannot ask for less once it is in.
What to Skip
Three extras we honestly advise against. First, extra sugar in an already sweet shake: fruit shakes are sweet enough, and added sugar flattens the fruit flavour rather than lifting it. Second, two strong flavours at once โ chocolate sauce on a pista shake, for example โ which cancel each other instead of combining. Third, anything purely for a photograph that you will not enjoy eating: a towering garnish looks wonderful for ten seconds and then collapses into the glass you actually have to drink.
How to Order Extras Like a Regular
The regular's method is simple: order the shake plain first, taste it, then add one extra โ not three โ chosen for what the glass lacks. Light shake, add cream. Plain shake, add a flavour. Smooth shake, add crunch. Rich shake, add nothing.
