Host a Juice Tasting at Home: A Simple Plan

A juice tasting sounds fancy, but at home it is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to spend an evening with family or friends. You buy several small glasses of different drinks, taste them in a sensible order, talk about what you like, and discover โ€” usually to everyone's surprise โ€” that people who swore they only liked one flavour actually love another. It costs little, needs no special equipment, and works for every age. Here is a plan that actually works, learned from watching customers discover new favourites at our own counter.

Pick Four or Five Glasses, Not Ten

The biggest mistake is over-ordering. More than five or six tastes and palates go numb, glasses go warm, and nobody remembers the first one. Four or five is the sweet spot. A good starter set covers the range: one light juice, one rich juice, one classic milkshake, one nutty or date shake, and one wild card. For example: orange juice (Rs 400) for brightness, pomegranate juice (Rs 500) for depth, a banana milkshake (Rs 250) for comfort, a badam milkshake (Rs 300) for nuttiness, and pineapple juice (Ask price) as the wild card โ€” bright, tangy and unlike anything else on the table. If children are tasting too, swap one adult flavour for a strawberry milkshake (Rs 300), which rarely loses a vote.

Serve in Order: Light to Rich

Order matters more than people expect. Start with the lightest, brightest drink and move towards the richest, so each glass is not drowned out by the one before it. Juices first, then milkshakes, then anything with ice cream. Between tastes, take a sip of plain water and a bite of plain bread or a cracker โ€” this resets the palate far better than another sip of juice does. Pour small servings, about half a glass each, into plain glasses; fancy glasses do not change flavour, but small pours keep everyone sharp to the end. Keep the glasses cold until serving, and taste within an hour of buying โ€” see our takeaway tips for keeping juice fresh on the way home.

Score Honestly, and Let Everyone Vote

Give everyone a simple scorecard โ€” just the drink names and three boxes: "Love it," "Like it," "Not for me." Children love this part, and their votes are often the most honest in the room. Add one line for "Would I order this again?" because that is the question that actually matters. Do not argue with anyone's score: taste is personal, and the point of the evening is discovery, not winning. At the end, count the "Love it" votes out loud and crown a house favourite. Families that do this regularly end up with a standing order โ€” the household's official list โ€” which makes every future order faster and easier. Our family favourites guide is a good starting point for that list.

Finish With Something Shared

A tasting should end with a shared dessert, not another round of glasses. A Special Falooda (Rs 300) or two for the table, or a half litre ice cream parcel pack (Rs 500) with a few flavours, gives the evening a proper finish and something to talk about while the scores are counted. Read our guide to what makes a good falooda if you want to judge the layers properly. And keep the evening short โ€” an hour of tasting beats two hours of lukewarm glasses and tired palates.

Make It a Habit, Not a Performance

The best tastings are casual. No dress code, no lectures about flavour notes, no pressure to use fancy words โ€” "sweet," "fresh," "too thick," "I want this again" are all perfect reviews. Try a new wild card each time: a chiku milkshake (Rs 300) one week, a cold coffee milkshake (Rs 300) the next, a cocktail milkshake (Rs 300) when you want a surprise. Over a few months your family will have tasted most of the menu, and your orders will be confident instead of guessed. That is the real prize of a tasting night: not a winner, but a household that knows what it loves.
